Taking Trauma Out of the Brain

Taking Trauma Out of the Brain Taking Trauma Out of the Brain The hell of the battlefield can make hell in the life of the solider, long after hes put down his gun. About 15 percent of U.S. soldiers returning from recent wars have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. Why one solider suffers from the disorder while others do not may never be known, but now researchersat Tel-Aviv University have found a way to train soldiers to significantly reduce the chance of being affected by PTSD.In less than extreme situations, fear is healthy. And fear is learned. Put a person in a situation that once proved dangerous and theyll likely feel a surge of fear. But when events go beyond dangerous and into the realm of trauma, the subsequent learned fear can become debilitating. Just how fear and posttraumatic stress disorder become debilitating is not well understood. But one thing is well known During the experience of fear, the amygdalae (two small parts at the end of the hippocampus , deep in the brain) become quite active. The amygdala is a brain structure that serves as a kind of alarm bell in our brain, says Jackob Nimrod Keynan, a researcher in cognitive neuroscience at the Sagol Center for Brain Functions in the Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, And the problem starts when this alarm bell goes out of control. We all need to recognize danger, but if youre at home and you hear the alarm, and if you cant turn off the alarm, you cant do anything.Research from 2009 showed that Israeli soldiers with more active amygdalae before a traumatic exposure were far more likely to have PTSD after. Talma Hendler, director of the center, began wondering if there welches a way soldiers could turn down that activity, before seeing combat, to avoid a potentially debilitating long-term aftermath.Detecting abnormalities within the brain with a fMIR machine. namen Wikimedia CommonsThe answer was biofeedback.Keynan, Hendler, and their colleagues testedvolunteers using an fMRI mach ine and asked them try to find ways to lower the activity in their amygdalae. A simple thermometer-like bar told them whether the activity was increasing or decreasing. We did not suggest strategies, says Keynan. We told people to find their own way. We found that it works well different people find different strategies. Perhaps there is an instruction that would better, but the part where you try different things is perhaps as important as finding things. The experimentation is very importantthats the theory. However effective, its not likely that fMIR machines will ever be rolled out to the barracks before a battle in the hopes of preventing PTSD. Theyre too big, too noisy, too expensive. Its like giving someone a medicine that costs a million dollars a pill, says Keynan. The EEG headcap with dry touch-electrode sensors. Image Tim Sheerman-Chase / FlickrSo the team turned to another brain imaging technique EEG. It was everything that fMIR wasnt cheap, quiet, mobile, and easy to use. The only problem was it doesnt show whats going on inside the brain, but whats going on at the scalp. But maybe what was going on at the scalp might somehow reflect what was going on inside the skull. It was a long shot, but to find out, researchers needed to do both at the same time. That is, subjects would have to wear an EEG cap while they played the lower-the-thermometer/calm-the-amygdala game from inside an fMRI machine. But the two techniques dont get along. Both imaging techniques interfere with each other. EEG interrupts magnetic homogeneity, and fMRI puts noise into the electric signals, says Keynan. So they turned to the teams biomedical engineer, Ilana Podlipsky-Klovatc, who came up with a system to make it all work. In short, she tweaked the EEG system to work in the fMRI, and found a way to remove the fMIR noise, which is systematic, from the EEG.There was every chance there would be no recognizable pattern in the EEG to match with amygdalae activity as picked up by the fM RI. Imagine how anxious I was before I hit enter, says Keynan. Amazingly, a signature emerged. This is not a direct measurement of amygdalae activity, he says. We dont claim to have recognized a signal coming from the amygdalae. Its a fingerprint. But its a fingerprint that proved to work with biofeedback. People who were able to calm the amygdalae with the EEG were subsequently able to do the same in the fMRI.Keynan and his colleagues have been able to take the cheaper lighter biofeedback machinejust an EEG cap with a laptopto bases and train soldiers to lower their stress vulnerability. The game they play now is a bit more sophisticated. Instead of trying to lower a bar, they watch an animated scene of a hospital waiting room, with angry shouting people around the front desk. As a soldier lowers the activity in his amygdalae, the people at the desk begin to sit down. Changing the chaotic scene turns out to be far more motivating than the old thermometer bar.Keynan hopes to train 15 0 soldiers soon. Then, in a year or two, theyll interview the soldiers to see how effective the biofeedback was in reducing PTSD. And soldiers everywhere may someday be able to leave the traumas of the battlefield on the battlefield.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Different people find different strategies. Perhaps there is an instruction that would be better, but the part where you try different things is perhaps as important as finding things.Jackob Keynan, Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center

Find Fortitude

Find FortitudeFind FortitudeHow do you find the inner fortitude to get up one more day and try again, even when the world kicks you in the shin with a golf shoe?Im sick and tired of people saying, This, too, shall pass.Worst. Consolation. Ever.Dont get me wrong. Its a nice clich and everything. But it doesnt change the fact that for a lot of people right now, life sucks. And the belastung thing they need is another marginally helpful, fluffy aphorism that sounds like the title of a heartwarming miniseries on Lifetime Television.People might know that this, too, shall pass but what they need is a game plan for how to successfully navigate life as its passing. Where do you find the fortitude to do that every day, even when the world kicks you in the shin with a golf shoe? The following are the some of the tips that have helped me find the fortitude to keep going during trying timesEmploy the diversity of the human spirit. I volunteer at an organization, the Go Network, which provides job search resources and education to displaced workforce professionals. The cool part is, unlike other organizations that support unemployed workers, this groups spirit is exceptional. Every time I host a workshop for them, Im overwhelmed by their massive optimism, bottomless faith and respectful camaraderie - not just in themselves, but in each other. Its not a misery-loves-company pity party. Its a weekly pep rally. Its a West Texas high school football game. And the collective and diverse human spirit of the group is the very oxygen that fuels each members inner fortitude to get up one more day and try again. My question is, what kind of company do you keep people who drag you into the pit or people who drive you into the stratosphere?Compare yourself to the best in yourself. Although many of our readers are unemployed, Im constantly amazed at their ability to endure harrowing times. Its inspiring, really. Instead of being excessively preoccupied with how devastating the economy i s, these guys invite a constant stream of excitement. They dig more into their hearts and, as one woman wrote me, Think back to their finest hours. Killer suggestion. What better way to find the inner fortitude to get up one more day than to think back to the last time getting up one more day wasnt a struggle? By regularly replaying mental reruns, you bolster your self-confidence and stimulate your self-belief. Do you remember what you were like as the best, highest version of yourself?Attribute important meaning to your pain. First, by changing your relationship with your pain from confrontation to infatuation. Thats right Im telling you to causa in love with your pain. Its amazing how little power something has over you when you love it. Second, by recognizing that whatever pain youre enduring is a regular part of the life experience. And undergoing such feelings is what makes you feel human, what makes you feel alive. Finally, by thanking your pain for showing up to teach you som ething. After all, we rarely discover things when were comfortable. You might as well set up the learning moment, right? Ultimately, inner fortitude is a function of befriending your discomfort and cooperating with things that are bigger than you. Are you brave enough to welcome the sting?Force an opening and enter into the spiral of acceleration. In The Ninety Percent Solution, author David Rogers writes, Lasting change rarely occurs when we ease our way into the future it comes when we leap. Lesson learned Hop down off your horse and pursue the beast on foot. Thats what movie heroes do. They enter into the territory their noble steeds wont even look at. I will die before my conviction does, they think. And they act as proactively as humanly possible. For example, anytime I give a presentation to people who are looking for work, I remind them Until you find a job, looking for a job is your job. Thats the winning mind-set. Thats what gets you hired. Remember Never underestimate the importance of sustained movement. How will you outweigh the drag?Relax into the reality of your life. Denial is a drug more addictive than crack and crystal meth put together. I know this because I used to be a heavy user. For me, pretending that something wasnt really a problem was ten times easier than confronting the result of my own immature decisions. Too schwimmbad the aftermath of such denial was taking its toll on my body, my attitude and my relationships. If only Id been smart enough to relax into my realities and face them head-on. Fortunately, making that mistake over and over taught me to continually ask the question What am I pretending not to know? This courageous inquiry makes denial melt under the stare of self-awareness. And thats where inner fortitude grows from your willingness to stand up to yourself. Dont avert your eyes. Confront your truth. Ease your way into it. And remember that all trouble carries with it the capacity to be conquered. What are you pretendi ng not to know?Lay some pavement. Hypothetically, lets say your life sucks. Understood. Instead of trying to camouflage your agony, try sending your breath to where it hurts. Thats what my yoga instructor, Natalie, would tell you Thread your breath through every action. The cool part is You dont have to sit in a smelly, sweaty room for two hours with a bunch of half-naked strangers to make this practice work. You just need to find something to pave yourself with. Prayer. Affirmation. Meditation. Whatever helps maintain a sense of inner control in the midst of outer chaos. Whatever cultivates a state of mind that entails equanimity and forbearance. Personally, I use all three simultaneously. My daily practice combines meditation, bejahung and breathing, and its helped me find the inner fortitude to navigate even the most devastating storms. What paves you?Whether or not this, too, shall pass is irrelevant. What matters is how you navigate life until this passes.Remember that, and youl l find the inner fortitude to get up one more day and try again, even when the world kicks you in the shin with a golf shoe.LET ME ASK YA THISWhere does your fortitude come from?

do not use a video resume

do not use a video resume do not use a video resume A reader forwarded me this emailfrom a job applicant, which she notes was sent after we posted a job listing with the explicit instructions to follow a link and apply through our online formHeres my video resume it highlights my experience, qualifications, etc.(LINK REDACTED)Its about 2 minutes, then it downloads my paper resume, references, etc. I have a lot of experience in this area. After reviewing my resume I think youll agree Im the person for the job.The readers commentA video? Really? And I have to sit through it to get to your paper resume? Is this becoming popular for real, or is it just another utensilien that people are trying?Yeah, its yet another bad idea being sold to job-seekers by people who dont hire and thus have no real idea whats effective with employers and what isnt. Add it to the growing list, along with creative resume designs, QR codes, and other gimmicks that no one who actually hires people for a living recommends. If you take a look at the people pushing video resumes, theyre all either (a) making money in some way off of it or (b) self-appointed career experts with no significant experience managing and hiring (which should deny them that right to advise on any of these topics, but thats another post). If you feel like doing this guy a favor and simultaneously giving the bad-career-advice industry the slap-back that they deserve, Id send him a quick note back and say, Like most employers, we dont accept video resumes. Please follow our application instructions if youd like to be considered.

John Deere

John Deere John Deere John DeereBreaking dirt welches no small task. Not in Illinois. Not in the middle of the nineteenth century. Farmers from the northeast, lured there by the seeming ease of flat, tree-less land, soon found that their wood and iron plows fought the ground more than they sliced through it. The saatkorn tools in the sandy soil of the east had been more of a knife-through-butter thing. Newly midwesterened farmers had to resort to the prairie breaker, a 125-pound beast requiring as many as seven oxen to drag it through the tough, blue-stem grass-studded dirt. Even with such a beast and beasts at their service, they could cut no deeper than two inches into the earth and were lucky to plow eight acres a season.Lucky for them, a Vermonter blacksmith was hot on their tails.John Deere had uprooted his family and shop five times, had his shop burned down twice. In 1835, unable to pay back a debt of $78.76, he was arrested. Rather than face the risk of debtors prison, he pai d his bail, left his wife and five children with the promise to call for them when he could, and headed west in the hopes of capitalizing on the burgeoning Illinois farm scene.Deere was struck by the difficulty of plowing the new land. Farmers followed their plows with a wooden paddle to scrape off the sticky, loamy dirt every few feet. The plows were unable to leave the nice furrows Deere had seen in Vermont.Image John DeereWhile visiting a mill in Grand Detour in 1837 Deere saw abedrngnisher cutting implementa saw. With its owners permission, he took the blade back to his shop. There he cut off the teeth, molded it to the leading edge of an iron plow, gave it a polish, and set it aside for a few days.Once it hit dirt, though, the steel plowshare became as necessary as water. It needed half the animals of a prairie breaker and cut deeper. The first price tag was $7. Thanks to the zing it made as it sliced soil, it became known as the singing plow.Deere did not realize at first that the plow would revolutionize his own business and that of the farmers, that his tinkering would lead to farming on a mass scale, and to his title of Plow King. He made few additional plows that year, only 10 in 1839. In 1840 he made 40, in 1840, he made 75, and in 1841, he made 100. By 1848, though, Deere had set up a plow-making shop, imported his family, and settled the Vermont debt from which hed run. The following year he produced more than 2,000 plows.John Deere steel beam plow. Image John DeereDeere never stopped trying innovate and improve his plowmuch to the annoyance of his partners over the years, who wanted to settle in and turn a buck as much as a furrow. Before long, the soil would curl right off a Deere plow, sharpening the plowshare as it did so.By the mid-1850s, Deeres factory in Moline employed 65 workers. Each year it consumed 200,000 oak planks, used up nearly 100 tons of steel and 200 tons of iron, and burned 575 tons of coal. With business as booming as that, it was inevitable that Deere would have to battle imitators, reverse engineers, and veritable bootleggers. Candee, Swan Co., for instance, set up shop in Moline in 1866. They produced a nearly identical catalog and had a nearly identical trademark, with the same shape, typeface, design, and Moline, Ill. at the bottom. Deere lost the case against them largely thanks to a previous employee who testified that nearly every one of Deeres own innovations had been borrowed in some way from others. And his trademark had not been officially trademarked. But the world owes its green, deer-bedecked John Deere caps to this defeat. Intent on distinguishing his own company from competitors, Deere had his logo redesigned to include the now ubiquitous stag (originally on the descent after a leap over a log, rather than the upward, bounding deer we know today). With the title of Plow King it was perhaps inevitable that Deere would wield his power in politics. In 1854 he was chair of the Whig county co nvention. He was also fiercely abolitionist and held that the end of slavery was of greater import than any other cause his party might back. He led a group to break up a pro-slavery gathering of democrats with yelling, hooting, and bellowing, as reported by a Democratic paper. He also started Molines first fire department, organized its first bank, and served two years as mayor.John Deere died in 1886, at the age of 82. Some 4,000 people came to pay their respects before his body was lowered into the earth that he was so adept at parting.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. With business booming, it was inevitable that Deere would have to battle imitators, reverse engineers, and veritable bootleggers.
